Why Join A Fraternity?

Fraternities encourage superior scholarship
Supervised study programs, test files, and Big Brother activities help to emphasize scholastic excellence.

Fraternities increase a student's chances of graduating
A study by the U.S. Department of Education indicated that members of fraternities and sororities had a record of 59% in persistence to graduation as opposed to 47% for non-members.

Fraternities inspire high standards of conduct
The fundamental principles upon which a fraternity is established teaches a respect for others, self discipline, loyalty, and a sense of brotherhood.

Fraternities create a sense of "belonging"
The campus environment can be cold and impersonal, but the fraternity can provide a warm, close knit, group of friends with similar interests and ambitions.

Fraternities develop leadership ability and responsibility
Fraternities train men to meet the challenges of management. Over 70% of U.S. corporate officers belong to fraternities.

Fraternities instill a spirit of concern for others
Many service projects from cleaning the local park to aiding a charity drive are undertaken. Members gain experience while working together for unselfish goals.

Why Join ΦΚΘ?

National Fraternity
Being in a national fraternity means joining a network of active members and alumni around the nation.

Diversity
UT Phi Kaps come from many different backgrounds. Our chapter is made up of a wide range of ethnicities including Caucasians, Hispanics,African Americans, Asians, and Indians.

Academic Excellence
Compared to other fraternities on campus, the average grade point average of U.T. Phi Kappa Theta chapter is among the highest. We maintain this high standard by having a system of study hours in addition to upperclassmen tutorials.

Philanthropy
Our national philanthropic organization is the Children's Miracle Network. On the local level, we also participate in mentoring programs as well as projects to aid the surrounding community.

Brotherhood
In a university with more than 50,000 students, it's very easy to get lost in the crowd. Joining Phi Kappa Theta provides a family within this large community, giving you the opportunity to develop friendships that last forever.

Economically
The chapter understands the financial challenges of today's college student. Therefore, a due structure has been established that is divided into installments to make payments less demanding.

Socially
Part of the college experience is interacting with other students and Phi Kappa Theta allows you to do this through parties, mixers, and other social functions. Without a doubt, Phi Kaps know how to have a good time!

Past, Present, & Future

Phi Kappa Theta has a rich heritage that reflects the ever-changing world around us. With a history over a century old, its members have shaped the nation we live in. To be a part of such a distinguished group of men is a true honor.

Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity is the result of a merger of its parent fraternities: Phi Kappa founded at Brown University in 1889, and Theta Kappa Phi Fraternity, which was founded at Lehigh University in 1919. These two fraternities merged in 1959 to form the united fraternity of Phi Kappa Theta, the only true merger of competing national fraternities in the history of Greek Life.

The founding father's vision be came a reality at the University of Texas in 1959 with the creation of the Alpha Pi chapter. Like all fraternities, Phi Kappa Theta had its prosperous years as well as its times of hardship. As a result of large graduating classes and dwindling associate member programs, in 1995, the local fraternity lost its charter and went into a period of reconstruction. In order to have the fraternity back on campus, an affiliate group would have to be created, colonized, and finally re-chatered. At that moment, the future of Phi Kappa theta at U.T. was uncertain.

In 1997, four U.T. men formed Alpha Pi Rho with the hopes of eventually bringing back the Texas Alpha Pi chapter of Phi Kappa Theta. These four brothers envisioned a fraternity like no other at U.T.: one that would transcend the social, economic, ethnic, and cultural boundaries that are strongly indentified with the U.T. Greek system. Exceeding all expectations, the local fraternity grew at an unprecedented pace, almost doubling its size with each new member class. By March 2000, the National Fraternity recognized the achievements of Alpha Pi Rho and honored them with affiliation to the national fraternity. In the months to follow, the determination of the members of this group was recognized and the fraternity was bestowed with colony status. Phi Kappa Theta was now the newest official addition to the U.T Greek system.

Currently our chapter consists of 50 members and we regained our charter in April of 2002. With persistence and the continuing support of over 500 Phi Kap Alumni in the Austin area, this goal was realized. But the support is not simply limited to this city. Today, Phi Kappa Theta has nearly 1,500 undergraduate men in 53 active chapters and 6 colonies across North America. Our 51,000 members include former President John F. Kennedy, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and numerous other professional and civic leaders.

When considering an organization you may want to join, keep in mind its goals, ideals, and standards. Phi Kappa Theta stands apart from the rest because we hold our calues throughout your life as a brother- from your associate membership, through your undergraduate experience, to your life after college as an alumnus. Like our motto states, we give, expecting nothing thereof. If you're an individual that expects more out of an organization, Phi Kappa Theta may be what you've been searching for.
